Why is it Important To You?
Ruth DeGolia: The first time I got here back to Guatemala after we started selling our merchandise, and actually having excessive quantity gross sales. These women, who I just respect so much, have gone by way of a lot. Many of them had their husbands killed in front of them through the war. A few of them had had to go into exile. And along with that, lots of them had gone via home violence. And for the first time, they have been earning their own money. And that meant not solely may they take delight in that, however they may take pride in purchasing issues for his or her children. Like buying meat. Buying them new sneakers. HowStuffWorks: They get a hundred p.c of the proceeds, correct? Ruth DeGolia: All of our income go back to our partner communities, and the artisans determine how they want to spend it, what initiatives they need to fund. And so most of them are funding scholarships, they usually get to pick out the scholarship students by a course of that we assist them set up. S
